Anna Helgeson was born on a commune in northern Wisconsin. She received a Bachelors degree in Studio Art and Global Studies from Ripon College in 2000, and a Master's of Fine Art from the Peck School of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee in 2011.
Helgeson currently teaches photography at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
Helgeson uses photography, performance, and installation to investigate socially relevant and personally compelling issues, including racism, sexism and homophobia. With an eye for the absurdity and complexity of power relations, Helgeson works to reveal the layers of meaning buried within social norms and cultural clichés.
She has exhibited widely throughout Wisconsin, including exhibitions at The Milwaukee Art Museum, Lucky Star Gallery, UW Milwaukee Union Gallery, and Woodland Pattern. She has been honored to receive a University of Wisconsin Layton Travel Grant, Honorable Mention in the University of WisconsinsWomens Studies research paper and project contest, and recently was published in Reframing Photography; Theory and Practice (Routledge Press).
